Our Story

Bob and Vicki PenhallThe Penhall Family is nothing if not creative. While performing with his blues band in Texas, Bob Penhall met Vicki Smart, a backup singer, and the two created a family of musicians, artists, writers, actors, and other creative types. All four children, Justin, Glynnis, Lindsay (Lilly) and Miles, played instruments and participated in theater growing up, performed beautiful songs with polyphonic harmonies, and were encouraged to pursue their passion.

Vicki jokes that her children all chose professions which benefit her: Justin became a computer geek who is always providing tech support, Glynnis is a high-end creative hairstylist and expert colorist (what grays?), Lilly became a writer and graphic designer with a specialty for books, and Miles is a chef who moonlights as a guitarist and vocalist with several bands (and includes his mother in many of his gigs).

Vicki Smart Penhall has been writing for over 30 years, everything from stage musicals to short fiction. When she decided to start self-publishing her own books in 2009, Penhall Publishing was born. Starting with Lies From The Past: A Viet Nam Tale and The Ghost of City Tavern (which later became The Jenna Glynn Ghost Stories Series), we learned the ins and outs of book covers, interior layout, ISBNs, ebooks, and working with graphics. It was our first adventure in book publishing and while they were far from perfect, it has been a great learning experience for us.

Since then, with over five authors and twelve titles to our name, we have grown creatively and expanded our staff to include editor James Barrett Rodehaver, a gifted poet who was introduced to Lilly Penhall through the open mic poetry scene in Dallas and whose collection, Strangely Wonderful, was published by our press in 2012. James also brought his dream of an anthology of survivor poetry, which has finally come to life as Not Dead Yet.

We have always been advocates of the arts, encouragers of dreams, and independent thinkers, which is why self-publishing has become our livelihood. We would love to work with you on your next project, so please contact us today to get started!
