O, Poetry by Lilly Penhall and Photography by Rosie Lindsey
Not just a book of erotic poetry…
this first book by Lilly Penhall spans a twenty year period of writing, from her first published poem, written at age eight about war in the Middle East, to her breakthrough “Ode to the Orgasm” which has captivated open mic audiences across the country. Reminiscent of Emily Dickinson, Dorothy Parker and Sandra Cisneros, the 31 poems are sensual and symbolic, irreverent and intellectual.
Lilly Penhall received a BA in English Composition and Rhetoric from University of North Texas, and has been pursuing writing since 1999, only interrupted by a short period of writer’s block called marriage. Her chapbook, O, was first published in 2010 and re-released in 2012 under her family’s publishing company, Penhall Publishing. Lilly was a co-editor of two issues of Let It Bleed, a femme zine, and has edited poetry and fiction manuscripts for other authors.
She was actively involved in open mic events in the Dallas area and, through her graphic and web design company InterStellar Graphics, created print and web graphics for Lost Art Open Mic at Bill’s Records in Dallas and Poets on X+ in Oak Cliff. She has been published in Forces Literary Magazine, Mad Swirl (www.madswirl.com), The Beatest State in the Union: An Anthology of Beat Texas Writers (Slough Press), Every Reason ‘Zine, Kleft Jaw, and is featured on the Live @ Lost Art Open Mic CD.
Now working full-time as a book designer and publisher with Penhall Publishing, she now enjoys helping make people’s dreams come true, as well as publishing poetry anthologies and keeping printed books alive.
“Born to live between the party and the dawn, Lilly Penhall is the love child of Janis Joplin and Pablo Neruda, a silvered sun and a gilded moon, and if this does not so very much impress you, be sure her writing will.” – Paul Koniecki, King of the Dallas Strip Club Poets and international ambassador for Mad Swirl
