Write or Die Promo

Write or Die Writing Contest

In effort to promote new and emerging authors, Penhall Publishing is holding a writing contest, Write or Die. We are looking to publish full-length manuscripts by authors who are previously unpublished. There is no theme for this writing contest, but we do have some guidelines about what kind of books we want to publish.

  • Author must not have published a full-length book or manuscript, in print or electronic format, either self-published or through another publisher (if you have had individual works published in anthologies, journals, zines, online collections or social networks, or a chapbook/short collection with no ISBN, that’s ok).
  • This contest is open to international writers and artists, although entries must be written primarily in English. The book will be released on Amazon US, UK and Europe as well as other distribution channels.
  • Manuscripts can composed of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, art, or any combination of these.
  • While we do not have a “theme” per se, we are looking for something edgy, fresh & literary.

The Grand Prize will be a full manuscript publication contract under Penhall Publishing’s imprint.

  • This includes necessary editing and/or proofreading, cover and interior design and layout, ISBN, printing by CreateSpace with distribution to Amazon as well as other channels, and listing/promotion on Penhall Publishing’s website and social networks (a $500 value).
  • Author will receive 50% of the royalties from sales (after CreateSpace and their distribution channels’ associated fees).
  • Author will also receive a copy of their book and be able to buy unlimited copies of their book at cost to sell in person and keep 100% of the profits from those sales.

Second Place Prize will be publication of a 24-36 page “chapbook” style book.

  • This includes necessary editing and/or proofreading, cover and interior design and layout, printing by Lulu and for sale on their website, and listing/promotion on Penhall Publishing’s website and social networks (a $100 value).
  • Author will receive 50% of the royalties from sales (after Lulu’s associated fees).
  • Author will also receive a copy of their book and be able to buy unlimited copies of their book at cost to sell in person and keep 100% of the profits from those sales.

We are charging a small submission fee of $10 to help offset the cost of publishing the winning manuscripts as well as to encourage serious authors to submit their work while not making it cost-restrictive to fellow “starving artists.”

Requirements for Contest Submission:

  • Please send an EXCERPT of the manuscript for consideration, up to 5 poems or 15 pages, in ONE document (.doc, .rtf or .txt) attached to the email or submission form. The title of the file should be the name of your collection/novel/book.
  • Art submissions should be attached as .jpg or .pdf files. You may send low resolution and/or watermarked versions for this contest if you wish, as long as there are high resolution original image files available for publication. Please send up to five images in addition to your manuscript along with captions and/or a short explanation of how you want to publish your book.
  • PLEASE DO NOT SEND US THE FULL MANUSCRIPT FOR THIS CONTEST. Upon winning, we will request the full manuscript from the authors.
  • The full manuscript should be no more than 350 pages typed with normal spacing and margins.
  • Deadline is August 30, 2015. This gives you plenty of time to finish writing, collecting and gathering your works!

Not Dead Yet: An Anthology of Survivor Poetry

Not Dead Yet is Available on Amazon!

Our newest publication, Not Dead Yet: An Anthology of Survivor Poetry, is now available for purchase on Amazon.com!

This project was originally conceived in 2011 by poets James Barrett Rodehaver and Todd “Grendel” Pack as a forum for those who have struggled through difficulties in life to have a forum to tell their stories. After James’s poetry collection, Strangely Wonderful, was published in 2012 by Penhall Publishing, he brought the idea of the anthology to editor Lilly Penhall, who took it and ran with it.

We received over 200 poetry and art submissions and ended up including 50 authors/artists, 112 poems and 24 works of visual art in our book. We have released the black & white version of the book, while the color version and ebook are in process and will be available to purchase within a month.

Congratulations and many thanks to the authors and artists who helped make this dream a reality, and who supported us and were patient with us during the creation of our first anthology. Each contributor will receive a free black & white copy of the book as a thank you for your contribution!

If you missed submitting works to this anthology, worry not. We are now accepting submissions for our next anthology, The Route of All Evil: Poetry About Vices. Find out more information and submit your works today!

Not Dead Yet is Alive!

Not Dead Yet is Alive!

UPDATE: IT’S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Not Dead Yet: An Anthology of Survivor Poetry has experienced some behind-the-scenes last minute derailing but we are still continuing this project, it is just going to take a little more time and work to get back on track. So don’t you worry, survivors!

Fortunately some very talented and awesomely cool poets stepped up to fill in gaps where needed and with a little redesign of the interior and cover we will be back up and running.

So I changed the release date to Halloween… how’s that for NOT DEAD YET??
